After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

Hello everybody and welcome to this After Action Report!

I had the privilege of participating in the WSIM replay of the "Glorious First of June 1794" battle.

I want to thank the Casus Belli club Nijmegen for his warm welcome and fair play, especially Marc, Sicco, Marleen, Niek, Mathieu and André W., who interacted directly with me. I also want to thank Sicco and Louis for their appreciation of the French language. Hats off to Marc and Marleen for their hospitality and the time devoted to my entertainment! cool

General view:

On the left of the picture, we have Marc, Sicco (I sat between them), Marleen (hidden behind Sicco) and Louis at the end of the table. On the right, we have André W and Mathieu.

As you can see, a rather long table and large room were necessary for this replay... tongue

Setup:

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/456858GloriousSetup.png

We were 12 players (6 on each side) and we played only with the SOL - No Frigates. The French fleet "La Flotte Française de Brest" is on the left.

On the pictures, F means "Squadron Flagship" and FF "Fleet Flagship". All SOL have 74 guns, except stated otherwise after the ship name. [As always, you can click on the pictures: Three clicks are necessary for the best zoom.]

French Van:

Re: After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

The game play:

Each side had some time to reflect upon their strategy... Marleen, our Admiral, opted for a cautious posture and decided to wait for the English move before altering our course... Marc said the British were going to attack our rear... and we should have listened to him!

This said, had we turned immediately in order to anticipate the British attack on our rear, we would have exposed our Van: Difficult decision, indeed! roll

Our wind attitude (C) considerably limited our speed (1) and manoeuvres, while the British clearly had the "Weather Gauge"...

So, here it goes and the British turn to our Rear:

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/668380CBNGlorious8.jpg

Please note Sicco, already adjusting his ships, "copying" the British moves... An independent manoeuvre Marleen chose to endorse...

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/475212CBNGlorious9.jpg

But we were already too late: The British had already reformed their line of battle while we were still turning, dangerously exposing the aft of our ships to rakes! yikes

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/412664CBNGlorious10.jpg

And Marleen paid it dearly, immediately losing a mast - or was it two?  [I remember a critical hit...] Bad start for our Flagship! sad

Re: After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

One of my ship lost a complete rigging section and felt behind, never again being able to find a suitable position in the battle: She fired only one broadside! lol

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/916313CBNGlorious12.jpg

Marc ordered "full sails" for his squadron and he was already beginning to advance on the (former) British Van, bypassing my ships...

While our Rear was in a dangerous position. Every single British ships could not fire, but it was just a matter of time before our rear would be completely outnumbered, as you can see on the following picture...

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/337461CBNGlorious13.jpg

Our centre was quite disorganised and critically out gunned, too:

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/134951CBNGlorious14.jpg

And then... a miracle happened! Well, sort of... hmm

Re: After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

The wind shifted 120° and became stronger: Not only our maximum speed would be limited to "2" (without full sails) but almost all ships would be caught 'In Irons", i.e.: Facing the wind! yikes

What followed was a completely chaotic situation: Each squadron captain deciding for his own, whether to stay were his ships were and drift, while firing at every target possible, or to move, trying to regain or keep some manoeuvrability...

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/695257CBNGlorious15.jpg

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/445222CBNGlorious16.jpg

Note the phantom appearance of an observer form the Luftwaffe... big_smile

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/773148CBNGlorious17.jpg

[You can see some salvo sheets on a few ships.]

While our rear was simply being slaughtered, our van managed to outmanoeuvre the British van and The Caesar and Russell were soon becoming drifting targets: Then, the French van began to fire at their hulls... [Exactly what the British were doing to our rear, but at a reduced scale, unfortunately!] hmm

It was 10 PM and our Saturday play ended there, letting us a good night sleep in order to think about what would follow...

Re: After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

I had two ships still able to make full sails and two having lost one rigging section. As a ship cannot use full sails if she has lost a rigging section, I decided to split my squadron in two: The ones limited in manoeuvrability would help Marc doing a maximum of damage on the British van: We were already very crowded there and two additional ships would have been useless, anyway!

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/450832CBNGlorious20.jpg

My other two ships would move close to the wind and try to help our centre, which was already on the verge of collapsing: Our fleet was supposed to protect our grain convoy from America! The citizens of our new Republic need this supply: Tonnerre de Brest! mad

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/627599CBNGlorious21a.jpg

You can see on the picture above, the Defence, trying to bypass the French fleet, but the Eole and the Mucius were immediately after her! I had no idea of her condition, but I chose to fire at her rigging, to keep her close to my guns and then to rake her... And it was payday for me! Aaarrh! big_smile My ships were quite fresh, having fired only a few broadsides, while the crew of the Defence was exhausted: After two turns of gunnery her mast felt...

https://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/679719CBNGlorious22.jpg

But,we had to stop: Our rear had been virtually annihilated and what was left of our centre was completely scattered! roll

Re: After Action Report - Casus Belli Club Nijmegen November 2017

Conclusion:

British VP: 7 French ships struck, 1 captured, 1 sunk, 1 exploded - She put a British ship on fire, but the fire would be off - Damn!

French VP: 4 British struck and 1 in helpless position.

Given the VP advantage to the French in order to balance the scenario, this is a marginal British victory: Something quite close to the historical result... Our grain convoy has slipped away from the British fleet and reached Brest!

One can already guess by the end situation and VP that the British enjoyed quite a high number of successful critical hits. [Potential critical hits on double dice must be checked by additional dice rolls.] While the French were no near that lucky! Our few potential critical hits were quite often fruitless - At least in my immediate surroundings!

Luck is not all, of course: The French should have been less cautious, I think - And, next time, I will take more initiative: My neighbour showed me the way... wink

Anyway; this was a great experience and it would be a pleasure to repeat it next year...

For those interested in the time involved: We played 21 turns in something like ten plus hours of play: So, more or less half an hour per turn, which is quite good for a scenario of this size, I would say...

That's All folks! tongue

Laurent a dit:

C'est un peu le but aussi: Nijmegen n'est qu'à 2h30 de route de Namur et ce doit être plus ou moins la même chose de Bruxelles: Pas si loin que cela...
